Now that the holidays are officially over, I can finally get back to business! Man, what a busy few weeks it's been...
I just hopped on eBay and found this great '67 Bristol 409. The last one I saw on here was about a year ago in West Virginia I think. This one is in PA and is listed with a Buy it Now price of $29,950 and has just 43,000 miles on the odometer.
Bristol cars were sort of similar to Rolls Royce, in that they are most noteworthy because of their price and limited availability (this is one of 74 built in 1967). They used the nicest materials they could, so when they're kept in good condition like this car, the high-quality leather and wood really stand out. This car appears to have been pretty well-cared-for.
One of the unique features of this car is the storage space for a spare wheel and the battery in the front fenders. It's almost like the storage compartments in the McLaren F1, wouldn't you say? The 5.2L Chrysler V8 is quoted in the ad as developing 250 hp and 340 lb/ft, and 0-60 mph is stated as taking only 8.8 seconds with a top speed of 130 mph.
These cars are not often seen in this country, so it's cool to see one that's been here with the same owner since '78 in such nice condition. The ad says he bought it in 1977 from Bristol (the company still sells pre-owned models as well as their new models). It's part of an estate sale, and the price doesn't seem too high for what you get, but I'm no expert on Bristols.....

I saw this on eBay too and was tempted to add it to my blog, but you beat me to it. :-) No harm, no foul. I've always been a fan of the Bristol marque, and the 403 is my favorite, closely followed by the whole Arnolt-Bristol range. BTW, that spare tire looks like a pain in the keister to get out. I wouldn't want to change a tire on that in a stereotypical English rainstorm.

ReplyDeleteIt kind of reminds me of how some modern exotics, the Ferrari 360 for example, come with a whole leather toolbox filled with fuses, light bulbs, tools, and of all things, an alternator belt. Who's changing a belt on the side of the road?
As our mechanic (who hated exotic cars) used to say, you can tell how crappy a car is by how many tools it comes with ;)

Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of, thanks anon. That 408 was unsold, bid to 15k r.n.m., but it didn't have it's original engine, and the restoration was looking a little aged. Also back in November '08 the market was a little, how shall I say it, deflated. I'm thinking this car must be worth about what the seller is now asking - $24,990.
